The Restore Trust in Government Act would prohibit Members of Congress, the President, Vice President, and their spouses and dependents from owning or trading stocks, commodities, futures, and similar investments, with limited exceptions for widely held funds, government bonds, certain small business interests, and personal real estate holdings. Covered individuals would be required to divest existing prohibited investments within 180 days of the bill’s enactment (or 90 days after becoming a covered individual), and violations could result in fines equal to 10% of the investment’s value and disgorgement of profits, payable to the U.S. Treasury.
