What it does
Existing federal law, the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) , requires the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to certify and regulate clinical laboratories that perform testing on humans. Existing law also provides for the licensure and regulation of clinical laboratories and various clinical laboratory personnel by the State Department of Public Health. Under existing law, the department inspects clinical laboratories and assesses a fee for licensure of those facilities.
