What it does
Existing law requires the State Air Resources Board, no later than January 1, 2018, to approve and begin implementing a comprehensive short-lived climate pollutant strategy to, among other things, achieve a reduction in the statewide emissions of methane by 40% below 2013 levels by 2030. As part of that methane emissions reduction goal, existing law establishes a target to reduce organic waste in landfills by 75% below 2014 levels by 2025. The California Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989 declares that it is the policy goal of the state that not less than 75% of solid waste generated be source reduced, recycled, or composted by the year 2020, and annually thereafter.
