In case of the absence or disability of the city manager, the city council has designated the assistant city manager as the duly qualified person to perform the duties of the city manager during the period of his or her absence or disability, subject, however, to the person's furnishing a corporate surety bond and conditioned on faithful performance of the duties required to be performed, as set forth in this chapter.
